29.07.2009

Katie Holmes had her hands full this week as she played the role of on and off-screen mom to two little girls, her own daughter Suri and nine-year-old actress Bailee Madison. The trio spent the day in the small town of Mount Macedon – to the northwest of Melbourne – where the 30-year-old actress and her young co-star are lensing new horror flick, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark. Florida-born Bailee, who has starred in the films Lonely Hearts and Bridge To Terabithia, was no doubt pleased to have been taken under Katie’s wing so far away from home.

Adam Rubin. Mets fire Bernazard, burn reporter

28.07.2009

After the news conference, Minaya discussed what had transpired with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon. The pair visited the Citi Field press box about two hours later, before the start of the Mets’ game against the Colorado Rockies. Minaya said he stood by his comments about Rubin but acknowledged that it “was not the proper forum to raise those issues.

” Asked if he would reach out to Rubin, who left the ballpark shortly after the news conference, Minaya said, “Possibly.” Wilpon said Rubin also had consulted him about career advice. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” Wilpon said. “I believe Adam was just doing what anybody else does.

Stephon Marbury. Nash, Suns reach 2

27.07.2009

In 1996, three point guards were selected among the top 15 picks in the NBA draft. Back then, the buzz surrounding, and salary earned by, Steve Nash did not compare with those of the other two, Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury. But as Iverson considers his best offer, $5.85 million from the Clippers, and Marbury considers playing overseas, Nash is the one with staying power.

Nash, a two-time NBA MVP, agreed Monday to a two-year, $22 million contract extension that reaffirms him as the face of the Suns. Using contracts Reggie Miller and John Stockton signed in their mid-30s as benchmarks, Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver added $2 million to his offer Wednesday to lead to an agreement that could keep Nash with Phoenix until he is 38. The deal makes the final year of his current contract - at $13,125,000 – fully guaranteed.

Died. Author E. Lynn Harris dies at 54

25.07.2009

LOS ANGELES – E. Lynn Harris, a pioneer of gay black fiction and a literary entrepreneur who rose from self-publishing to best-selling status, has died, his publicist said Friday. He was 54. Publicist Laura Gilmore said Mr. Harris died Thursday night after being stricken at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, and a cause of death had not been determined. She said Mr. Harris, who lived in Atlanta, fell ill on a train to Los Angeles a few days ago and blacked out for a few minutes, but seemed fine after that.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said only that a man matching Mr. Harris’ name and date of birth had died Thursday night at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which was confirmed by a hospital spokeswoman. Gilmore said an autopsy would be performed early next week.

Reunion. I actually was 16 and pregnant

24.07.2009

And there we were, reaching for the Kleenex again. We weren’t sure what to expect when we first heard that MTV — the network that arguably started the reality TV craze with “The Real World” nearly a generation ago, the channel known for launching the second careers of Bret Michaels and Flava Flav — was planning a documentary-style series on pregnant and parenting teenagers. But we knew one thing: We were going to watch every single episode. My daughter and I consider ourselves experts on the teen parent in pop culture for the simple fact that, in 1989, I became one.

Back in the ’90s and into the early part of this century, when teen pregnancy rates were steadily declining (between 1991 and 2005, the rate dropped by a third), studios were perhaps a bit more open to portraying teen mothers as something other than an unmitigated tragedy: There was “90210,” in which the pregnant character, Andrea, ends up at Yale; the utterly charming, character-driven in which the daughter, strangely enough, also ends up at Yale; and the weirdly revisionist version of in which the character played by Drew Barrymore does not end up going to college at all, unlike Beverly Donofrio, the former Village Voice writer whose memoir is the source for the film. But lately, my daughter and I have had a hard time finding enough space on the TiVo to keep up: A couple of high-profile celebrity teen births, coupled with a slight (but still depressing) uptick in teen birth rates have led to an all-out cultural obsession with teen and/or unwed mothers. In this post-”Juno”/Bristol/Jamie-Lynn summer, we’ve had one patronizing , hosted by Jay Schadler; a pregnant band geek on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”; Lindsay Lohan as a fake unwed mother in the straight-to-TV movie “Labor Pains”; and, my personal favorite, “THS Investigates: Teen Pregnancy Nightmares!” a one-hour special that came in the lineup right after “When Husbands Kill!” We also had “16 & Pregnant,” a show that proved so popular that it is getting a reunion show tonight and also coming back for a second season.

Hell Kitchen Fight. BBC America Ushers In New Series And HD

22.07.2009

Most networks are happy to make their HD upgrades strictly technical in nature. BBC America is beefing up its content to go along with its sharper high-def transmission. At the very least, it seems to have been holding back on presenting a number of terrific series until the HD transmission starts on Monday.

And it starts with the kind of series you should plan your week around. “Torchwood: Children of Earth” (BBC America, Monday through Friday, 9 p.m.) takes the characters of ‘ fanciful series about a secret team that protects Earth from alien attacks and gives them their most daunting challenge.

Primera. Take it away, Miha: “I can understand our fans’ ‘frustrations’ only too well, for Tevez could have also considered going to a different or a.

21.07.2009

in Slovenia with his daily update on the fraught and frenetic world that is the English Premier League. Take it away, Miha: “I can understand our fans’ ‘frustrations’ only too well, for Tevez could have also considered going to a different or a foreign club where he wouldn’t irritate us so much as he will in the blue shirt! I think that effect of that will only be of short-term or will bump up only in the Manchester derby matches. Money is so obviously the only factor players end up at certain clubs. It happened at Chelsea and we got over that and it is happening at Man City and we’ll get over that too.

I feel it’s going to be hard to catch the top four short-term, but I feel it will be a different order this time. I was more optimistic that we would sign Eto’o or somebody but I know I think Chelsea could nick it this time. I am not convinced Liverpool can do it, and certainly Arsenal can’t.

Galaxy. Angry Beckham confronts trash

20.07.2009

The midfielder attempted to jump over a barrier as he left the field at half-time into a section of the crowd that had been jeering him. The former England captain was held back by security staff, who also needed to restrain an angry fan who left his seat and rushed towards the footballer. The 34-year-old afterwards tried to explain what had happened by saying: “One of the guys was saying things that really wasn’t very nice. It was stepping over the line. I said ‘You need to calm down and come shake my hand’ and he jumped over.

” Asked whether his intention was to do “a Cantona” and attack the fan, Beckham smiled and said: “No, of course not.” The man was arrested by California State Dominguez Hills police for trespassing because he left the seating area, a Home Depot Center spokeswoman said. “I know there was some turmoil in the corner but I didn’t see it so I can’t comment,” Galaxy manager Bruce Arena said.
